6 small ways to make 2022 your best year yet

With everyday struggles, economic uncertainty and the Covid-19 pandemic ongoing, life can certainly be challenging.

But don’t despair. A new year brings a fresh start. And while the ‘New Year, New Me’ trope is clichéd, there is an element of truth to it. January really is a good chance to adopt new healthy habits and shift negative mindsets. But move over Dry January and impossible New Year resolutions, small tips are what we need. (Plus, they’re easier to remember and stick to).

Here are 6 small ways to make 2022 your best year yet.

Expect the unexpected

If there’s one thing the pandemic taught us is that the devil really does fool with the best-laid plans. Life can be unpredictable. We really don’t know what’s going to happen next year, next month or even tomorrow. Yes, we can try to make plans for the future but we really must allow ourselves some wriggle room for things not working out the way we want them to.

By being more flexible and open to things going wrong, we become adaptable and resilient (or at least it helps).

Keep a sense of humour

This little tip links to the above one. And actually, they both help each other. Being able to laugh at a situation (or at least see the funny side) can help you overcome a host of struggles.

Of course, it goes without saying that serious matters deserve serious attention. But if you’re having a bad day because things just keep going wrong (and by this we mean relatively minor things like missing the bus, spilling a drink over your new hardback, repeatedly catching your sleeve on a door handle etc.), try to see the funny side. Accept it’s not your day but that tomorrow might be. Laughter really is the best medicine.

Get in touch with someone you’ve lost touch with

Depending on the person, this one might require a bit of gut. But if you’ve lost touch with a friend or family member over the years, why not make 2022 the year you get back in touch?

Of course, if this person is toxic or treated you badly, we’d recommend steering clear. But if there’s somebody who you once liked and now miss, it only takes a phone call or email to let them know you’re thinking about them. They may be thinking of you too. In which case, it isn’t high time you both met up again already?

Clear out one drawer

If you’re sitting at home looking at the mess around you and thinking about your unorganised cupboards, do something about it. But don’t worry, we’re not asking you to do everything all at once. Simply just start with a drawer. One drawer.

Once you organise an unorganised drawer, you’ll soon to start to feel more organised. It might even motivate you to organise another drawer and hey, how great would that be? You’ll have two organised drawers. But if it doesn’t and you find yourself done after organising only one drawer, that’s okay. You now have one organised drawer. That’s one more than you had before.

Carry out a good deed

It really is true that helping people makes you feel good. And it often doesn’t take a lot of effort. A simple act of kindness like buying a coffee for a homeless man on the street or waiting to hold the door open can really make somebody’s day.

Helping people is also contagious. You’ll soon be carrying out good deeds for more people. And you’ll become a much better person in the process. Win, win, win.
