Banks commonly transfer money using a wire transfer. In order to make a wire transfer, you’ll need the recipient’s full name and address, the name and address of their bank, their SWIFT code and (depending on which country the recipient lives), you’ll also need their International Bank Account Number (IBAN) or ABA code. Banks must use the exchange rate set by their network that day – and in today’s global economy of swinging values, that’s not going to put you in the best position when transferring money. In addition to missing out on the best possible exchange rate for your transfer, you’ll likely encounter hefty hidden fees when using a bank.
Another popular transfer method is with your local money transfer agent. An agent could be a post office, mini market or even a gas station that operate like franchisees in that they carry a particular money transfer brand and provide a variety of services including money transfers. This method doesn’t require a bank account – upon arranging your transfer, the recipient will receive a unique code, which they’ll need to quote back to the agent in order to receive their money. Whilst this option is useful for those without internet access, they can be expensive and there’s the ongoing issue of security – for example, the unique code could easily be spotted or overheard.
